CRUISES - Page 3

Other Cruise Expenses (continued)

6.     Shore excursions can often be a highlight of your cruise, but they are expensive.  Compare the prices offered through the cruise line, with prices you can find over the Internet for both the same excursion companies, as well as other companies not on the cruise line’s list.  In both cases, these excursions can be booked ahead of time, if you want to make sure of availability.  However, in most ports, you can buy excursions when you get off the ship for less money. An added advantage of waiting until you get to the port is knowing what the weather will be like, and what other excursions are available.  You just may want to change your mind.  Choose wisely and do not think you have to do everything.  Having some spare time to shop and just sight see is free and a lot of fun.

7.     Shopping is a favorite past time of cruise passengers.  There will be plenty of opportunities both on board the ship and in port.  During the cruise, ships will generally run sales for different items at different times.  Try to buy on sale if possible.  Some of the prices are quite good.  Ports are tourist areas, which means that, for the most part, real bargains are not all that easy to find.  Be judicious.  And remember, when buying all that duty-free liquor make sure you are not planning on taking it home as a carry-on on your airplane trip.  Liquids can no longer be taken through security.  Given that you will not have the time to arrange different shipping, you will have to abandon your purchase at the airport.  So, think ahead.

8.     Check to see if your medical insurance will cover any medical costs when on the cruise.  If not, consider if you should consider buying separate coverage for the cruise.

9.     And finally, gratuities.  Tips are handled differently by different cruise lines. At a minimum, most cruise lines strongly encourage tipping and suggest an amount.  Whether you agree with this amount, or want to adjust it up or down, depends on the service you received.  You can either tip by leaving cash for the various persons who serviced you (generally in envelopes provided by the cruise line at the end of the cruise), or you can add it to your bill at the end of the cruise.  Some cruise lines automatically add the gratuities to your bill.  If you disagree with this procedure, or want to make adjustments, make sure you stop into the Purser’s Office to make changes.  And some cruise lines include the gratuities in the cruise fare in which case there is no decision to be made, unless you would like to leave additional gratuities.

Bon Voyage!!!
